This is probably the single best book on Optimization that exists as of March 2018. I like it because it has clear expositions on actual algorithms you can use to solve optimization problems along with toy examples to program complete with their numerical solutions so you can check your implementation.The major drawback to this book is its inconsistent detail with respect to illustrating how you can convert between the different forms of an optimization problem. The section on Semidefinite Programming (SDP) and Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) comes to mind. The SOCP subsection is very clear on how you can convert between the three forms of an SOCP, but the SDP section is not. The SDP subsection is practically opaque about how you can convert the various examples of SDP into a prototypical primal and dual pair to actually apply the algorithms in the chapter. It also does not explain how to calculate the symmetric Kronecker product, and instead leaves it as an exercise. To me, this is too pedagogical and belongs in a university course textbook, not in what seems to be a reference manual for practicing engineers.If you need to learn about how to apply SDP to your optimization problems, this is not the book for you. This is really disappointing because all the other sections are so good. But if you need to learn how to apply and solve basically any other type of optimization problem, then buy this book. It is literally as good as it gets, and is something every practicing engineer needs on their shelf.
Basically I liked the book. As a practicing "front-line" grunt aersospace engineer for a large Fortune 500 Company this book is a good and practical book for the control systems analysis I do. The big problem with optimization books like this one is that the examples are very contrived and trival. What a book like this is suppose to do is help one figure out if the the problem he/she is currently working can be "cast" into an optimization problem and then solved by any of the algorithms presented. This book is a little weak in that respect. But it is still useful and I am glad I have it in my collection.
