#106,468 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
The HARVARD CLASSICS -- as originally published -- was a wonderful, early 20th century collection of all types of signifcant literature (fact & fiction, prose and poetry, history and biography, science and theology, philosophy and psychology, lectures & essays, etc.) designed to educate those who made the effort to systematically read and ponder its vast and varied content. But if it were ONLY a collection of great books, in today's ebook age of easily-accessible, free public domain works, there would really be little need for such a set; a mere list of titles would suffice for us to download as we desired to read them. But the HARVARD CLASSICS provided MORE than the great works themselves. It also offered author biographies, introductions, explanatory footnotes, interpretive helps, textual criticism, and other useful supplemental information to enable the reader to better understand that which was being read. If any of that is missing, the result is not really the HARVARD CLASSICS but merely a nice assemblage of free, public domain works.Sadly, a full and truly complete ebook edition of this iconic set does not yet exist. This LBA edition (published Dec. 17, 2018) repeats the flaws of some half dozen previous editions currently available in the Kindle Store; these were apparently copied from the same imperfect source. (1) The active TOC only lists 71 (51+20) volume numbers; it does not list the specific content within those volumes. (2) The text of several volumes is very faint and cannot be darkened. (3) Much of the aforementioned supplemental information is missing. (One example: This edition provides only the text of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE; it does NOT provide the biographical note, the list of characters, the criticisms and interpretations of the original.) This is the major defect. (4) Translators' names are not always provided. There are some editions that ARE different, but are still imperfect. (1) There is at least one low-priced edition from A to Z Classics that has three of the above flaws but it DOES have a useful and worthwhile TOC. (2) POOR RICHARDS PRINT SHOP offers a very nicely-done set of 51 volumes but omits the SHELF OF FICTION. (3) Aeterna offers a deliberately expurgated edition missing all footnote information as well as the removal of 10% original content deemed unsuitable for Roman Catholics. (4) Delphi has an edition with some formatting issues scattered throughout and the absence of SOME footnotes and other information. So what's a would-be purchaser of the HARVARD CLASSICS to do? My advice would be to skip the deliberately incomplete Aeterna edition altogether. If the absence of the SHELF OF FICTION doesn't bother you (and if the price is okay with you), go with the Poor Richards set. Otherwise, sample the rest and eliminate any whose TOC merely lists volume numbers, because you will definitely want to be able to easily access all the fabulous treasures within. Of the remaining editions, you may also need to take price and formatting into account. The result will, sadly, still be imperfect, but an imperfect HARVARD CLASSICS is, nevertheless, better than none at all, and it will suffice until a better one comes along.I previously rated some imperfect editions higher than 3 stars, but I expect newer editions to improve upon those that went before, not repeat the same gaffes. A perfect HARVARD CLASSICS would rate 5 stars.
Even if incomplete: the expansive knowledge, the missing context of our human-ess, the larger heritage of the what has pushed our desire for the true; this collection (though intimidating in size and scope) should belong to every library. It is important in my opinion to start on v50 read the introductions and the reading guides and then from there follow your instincts. Mine led me to the Lectures v51…from there I may start at v1. I don't know yet. Take up a true challenge, try it. The intro and reading guides alone had me bound. The lectures have been quite interesting too. Perhaps my review will change but I feel such a fierce undertaking deserves a better score than say 7 Habits...
A wonderful read.
