The Moon and I, by Betsy Byars

Review

★ “An adroit blend of telling experiences from Byars’s life and ingenuous confidences about her writing. This ebullient self-portrait is so delightfully informal that it may seem artless; actually, the dovetailing of the several elements is extraordinarily skillful, the comments on writing as sage as they are succinct.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))★”It is pure pleasure and privilege to be invited into the world of such a warm and engaging artist. This goes far beyond most memoirs in its ability to engage the reader.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

From the Back Cover

The Moon that inspires Betsy Byars's memoir isn't the one in the sky, but a huge, harmless blacksnake she finds in the rafters of her porch. This meeting begins an exploration of the writing process. With energy, wit, and delight, the Newbery medalist shows how "the good scraps" of her life, from a bully named Bubba to a gift-wrapped dime, weave into her work.

This is a good story, that just happens to be true. I laughed throughout, because it is funny --- and also because I could relate to so many of her thought processes (and consequent predicaments)!I bought this book because I wanted to read it again, but it is no longer available in my local public library. It was supposed to be delivered today by 8:00. It is now past 8:30 and the book has NOT been delivered. So, this purchase gets 5 stars for CONTENT and 0 stars on service. I'll update when delivery happens.

I have read this book to my fifth graders for the past few years. It is a great memoir that makes me want to try to write my own book! Great author!

Great memoir! Highly engaging and well written.

I loved the way she went about telling the story. It is a good book to use when explaining a memoir to children, and during writing instruction. I recommend this book.

(picture from google.com)This is the book where Betsy Byars takes a short break from her usual fiction novel world, and finally write an autobiography-like story of her childhood life and also some hints about her current one.(Moon is actually a name for a snake Betsy Byars found in her porch one day. She grows found of it, and always wonders where the snake could be, after it ran away.)I cannot really tell you more than that, since it will totally ruin the book and all it stands for, but this book was not written only for some measly stories, but for a lifetime-approved and tried guide to writing. In about the middle of the book Betsy Byars talks about how she wrote all of her life, and how she is still continuing on. It was a very helpful tip of how you should get started on your book, and not to wait endlessly for an idea to suddenly pop into her head.Overall, it is a very short and a fun book, and I am very surprised there aren't any reviews to be read in amazon :(

this book has absolutely nothing to do with the moon. this is a story about betsy byars life. she tells about some points in her life that inspired some of her books. and she explains how a snake made her think about it all. this is the first book i've read by her. if all of her books are writen like this, then i would love to read others.

"The Moon and I" is an excellent book that tells the life of the famous author, Betsy Byars. It is a good autobiography. It has vivid descriptions. Betsy writes about her life and how she met a black snake, Moon. I like this book because it makes me feel like I'm with her in her life. What I dislike about this book is that the title was a little misleading. I thought it was about a moon! I recommend this book to anyone; it is for all ages.
