I've read a number of the Haunted Bookshop Mysteries and this book was up to the usual high standards. Pen and her personal PI ghost, Jack (a former cop and PI who haunts the bookstore) solve a mystery focusing on the elite, rich, and invincible young people. There are two mysteries in this book: one, the death of a "tell all" exploit of the murder of a young, wealthy, deb and the other one of Jack's old cases, from the 1940s. Just like the classic book, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, (also a wonderful classic movie)I believe that Jack and Pen not feel (can a ghost feel?) repsect for eachother, but love.
Such a sad story. So many young people with no goals or purpose turning to drugs and sex out if boredom. Then they all stick together to cover up what happened.
Enjoyed this story very much! I laughed and loved the characters even more. Going to read the next one! Thanks!
The Ghost and the Dead Deb (Haunted Bookshop Mystery)Enjoyed this book. I enjoy the writing of Alice Kimberly(pseudonym) and Cleo Coyle (her other pseudonym) I like the characters and the relationship between the dead gumshoe Jack Shepard and his investigative partner Mrs. McClure. As far as the mystery goes, you need to pay attention to details while reading, so it's not as quick a read as other cozy mysteries but entertaining non the less.
The main text is ok, writer will explain certain things that was stated in other books of the series so you don't feel lost, but I still skip over a lot of the stuff written at the beginning of each chapter. Characters are believable, plots are excellent. Reading books in order.
I was really hoping the heroine would develop more strength for herself in this second story of the series but she was still the hand-wringing, bowing-to-anyone-to-stay-away-from-any-confrontation doormat. And to only add to my negative opinion of her, she does some really silly things in this story regarding evidence. Also, there was too much of the heroine and not enough of the supporting characters so the book became rather stale with a pretty bland ending. The next one (The Ghost And The Dead Man's Library) was much better.
I'm enjoying this series -- no obvious fake red herrings, enough believable suspects to keep the reader guessing, and a strong but not annoying female lead. The forties-type ghost who's the second character is a good match for the lead, and the beginnings of a "he's here and now" but "he can bring her into his past" is leading to some interesting heat. The contrast between Newport society and the rest of the world was well drawn, too.
I've been totally enjoying this whole series. They're funny. They're researched enough to give an enjoyable glimpse into the past. They're a bit challenging to solve but not too hard. The reader is given all the clues necessary. I'm having a great time with them.
