I can't say enough about how excellent, enlightening and absolutely beautiful this book is for anyone. It is such a breath of fresh air, pure and simple truth on marriage and family life. I especially love his explanations of the passages on marriage in Ephesians. This book should be required reading for all couples going through marriage preparation. I sure wish my husband and I had read this 12 years ago instead of that watered-down 1960-70s stuff that they give you--but still, better late than never! This has SO MUCH MORE depth to it, than your typical marriage prep. If couples would read this, they would have a clearer understanding of what they're getting into.This is excellent for people who have been married <1-100 years as well!!Even single people would have a better understanding of the vocation and what the end is in their spouse.Give this to your sons and daughters now!
A beautiful book of St. John's homilies on marriage and family life. As a husband and father, I found a lot of information useful to improve my life in both aspects. St. John values the moral precepts or Christian virtues as being the most beneficial characteristics one can find in a spouse. These virtues act as a balance, benefiting both spouses by bringing each person closer to God.In keeping this review brief, I did want to point out that there was one fact of the book that I found particularly interested. During St. John Chrysostom's time, the wedding celebration (and pre-celebration) contained song and dances of debauchery and decadence. As I read these words, I felt like they were written in the modern age. Apparently over the course of 1500 or more years some things never change! St. John urges us to avoid these things as they are unnecessary contrary to married life.
I can't express enough how important Saint John's homilies are, and how important it is to have a beautiful, flowing translation. St. John Chrysostom was called "Golden-Tongued" because of the beauty of his words, and I believe that this translation of these homilies does justice to his title.His 20th homily on Ephesians is especially moving, and very poignant in its presentation of Christian "husbandhood". What we're called to be is so incredibly countercultural- so radically different from what society expects us to be. When discussing what it means to "love your wives as Christ loved the Church," St. John calls us to suffer whatever torments our wives subject us to, as it will never be close to what Christ received from the Church.His call for marital love, peace, and yes - sacrifice is brilliant. It's almost as if he anticipated this age when he wrote these homilies.
Nothing like this piece on the topic of marriage and family and I should add love life. Thoroughly Biblical an intensely Christ centered, I can't believe any other writing on this topic can outshine this work by Saint John Chrysostom. I was much blessed and should also add sanctified by this great work by the patristic saint.
Wonderful, wise words by Chrysostom. My fiancé and I are reading this book as we prepare for marriage. If you're an Orthodox Christian couple looking for a book on marriage that is easy to follow, yet full of wisdom, this is a great choice. So much of what Chrysostom wrote in his time is definitely applicable to modern life.
This is a great book on choosing a mate and marriage. I highly recommend it!
