This book is a great starting point for individuals who are serious about making change, but need support and guidance to keep them on track during the process. There are many obstacles to being successful in our goals to make changes in our lives. Changing to Thrive sets out, in a workbook style, to help people gauge their readiness to change and helps them to see the challenges that might derail the change process. This is an excellent and practical guide.

This book is important to me as a resource for the training I do with social service staff in Motivational Interviewing. I checked it out from the library first, but then decided I needed my own copy. The authors' work is at the foundation of all the training I have received and deliver on the subject, and it's great to get their current take on this important and changing field of understanding. Also, the book has pragmatic applications that can serve as tools for positive change in many situations.

This is a great follow up to Prochaska's original work on the stages of change. Makes the stages easy to put into practice.

Changing to Thrive is not your average self-help book. It's a research-backed approach for someone with a serious interest in positive change. That doesn't mean it's dry and statistical; on the contrary, the writing is conversational and personal. The authors walk the reader through the various stages of change. They describe what can go wrong and how to right it. Checklists and exercises are included to help determine needs and identify progress. Whether the desired change is smoking cessation, control of alcohol problems, weight loss, or forming an exercise habit, good attention is paid to managing the stress that can result from a life style alteration. This approach has a proven record of helping people succeed in their goals. Short of finding a therapist who specializes in this model of change, this is an excellent guidebook to a healthier life.

I checked out the book and read the Introduction. It is laid out so nicely and I can get a good sense of the book from it. Who in this world couldn't use positive change in their life!. . . whether they realize it or not! I pondered over the 'precontemplation' phase as a legitimate part of the process most health care providers do not acknowledge. You are right. Am eager to continue reading!
