Martin Holladay joined the staff of www.GreenBuildingAdvisor.com in 2008 and writes for Fine Homebuilding magazine about energy-related topics. He has worked as a plumbing wholesale counterperson, roofer, remodeler, builder, writer, and editor. He built his first passive-solar house in northern Vermont in 1974 and has lived off the grid since 1975.

I recommend this book to anyone who is: a new builder, a new engineering student, a fresh mechanical engineering graduate, a curious homeowner, or an old dog who wants to learn new tricks.
For several years I have faithfully read his columns. To have this "bible" of thoughtful information at hand is a wonderful regular reference. And not just for me but for friends who are contemplating their own building and renovations.
This has a lot of insight brought together into one place. I'm very happy with the book. I do wish, however, that it had a section on Southern California stucco houses.
Easy to reference. Easy to read and understand even the most complex / head scratching building issues encountered in the past 50yrs of home construction evolution. What works. What doesn't. And what is currently still developing.So wish I'd had this 10yrs ago (grin), but so appreciative to have for the next project evaluation & implementation.
Really learned a lot from this book. It’s more of a collection of articles than a cohesive, flowing book. Some stuff repeated.
So glad I found this before our house plans are done!
Great read for anyone interested in learning the most relevant information on green building
I've followed the author's weekly blog postings on Green Building Advisor's "Musings of Energy Nerd" since Martin began writing the column back in 2009, and this is a wonderful compilation of his best 50 blogs or so. There's no one who writes better on the potentially dry topic of energy-efficient homes--his blogs are always informative, entertaining, provocative, and--occasionally--refreshingly irreverent. Read it and you'll see. First rate!
