I thoroughly enjoyed reading Woman of Flames by Kim Stokely. I could hardly wait to see what happens and yet did not want the story to end. Though little is said about Deborah in the Bible, the author's artistic writing of a story around Deborah, found me enjoying the book more than many I have read in the past. There is so much of God's Word in the Bible wrapped around every situation. Deborah's thoughts and anticipations as a child and of course just seeing Deborah in the light of temptation, giving up herself to save a child, and yet always seeking God for His will to be accomplished. Stokely gives us an insight into a child's heart's desire for God, the battles she would face with her family, the doubt, the insecurity, and yet - always seeking God and His will and standing firm in what God says - even against family. Many who have read about Deborah in the Bible, or any other person, fail to stop and consider how the person started, how they must have felt, how they failed and then stood strong. The highs and lows, doubts and despair at times. Our lives are no different today as we serve our Savior Jesus, our Lord God. We grow from each step up and from each stumble. Good job Kim Stokely. Very, very, good read - for me.
I love historical fiction, and well-written Christian historical fiction is even better! WOMAN OF FLAMES by talented Kim Stokely pulled me into the world and mind of Israeli prophetess Deborah, beginning when she was just a very young girl with a very big heart for God. My heart went out to her as she was ridiculed for her desire to study and know more about God, rather than learn to be a "good Hebrew woman." As we know from Judges 4 and 5, the true foundation for the fictional story, Deborah got her heart's desire and was used mightily by God to save her people from the Canaanites terror. Kim Stokely provides a beautiful, creative account of what could have been Deborah's exciting life, with the major points being Biblically accurate. Even weighing in at nearly five hundred pages, I loved it all. It gave me a new and stronger appreciation for the first woman chosen and used powerfully by God.
I have read many books that purport to tell the story of a biblical character and have left me feeling as if the story could have been told a little differently or I felt as if the story had been rushed along. Kim took me along in this little tale that was told as skillfully as one of my favorite authors in this genre, Anita Diamant, did with her book The Red Tent.The book takes us from meeting the girl Deborah as a young child, and tells a story of her growing up as she fights against her society's rules about education. I found myself cheering for Deborah as she grew and began to fulfill the plans that the God of Israel had for her.When I finally put the book down after I'd finished it my reaction was easily summed up in one word. Satisfied. I found this to be a wonderful read. I will easily recommend it to my friends who read. For a book about a biblical character it was pleasantly not preachy, but did a fantastic job of telling a compelling story.I can't wait to read the next book by Kim Stokely. For a first book, this one was truly enjoyable.

She grows up, falls in love and…okay you truly need to read this book.My favorite parts;* I loved the progression of Deborah’s heart toward God and I cried at her first prophecy.* In Woman of Flames I experienced a wedding ceremony in ancient Israel. I’d read about the elements involved before, but this time I was there!* Jael – the woman with the tent peg. Why? How? Kim Stokely builds a relationship between Deborah and Jael, provides a trauma bond, and weaves us a story that makes sense.Woman of Flames is a masterful melding of Scripture, history, tradition and imagination, putting you in the gritty world of Israel’s judges. Kim did an unusually good job with both dialogue and culture, giving you a sense of how people lived without stilted ‘ancient’ language or thinly veiled modern dialogue and thinking.In the end, I felt that I knew not only Deborah, but the God who stops at nothing to bring His people back into fellowship with Him.
Author Kimberly Stokely’s novel, Woman of Flames, sweeps readers along with an exciting, skillful narrative. Effortless historical details, sure storytelling and vividly drawn characters propel this thrilling tale of the struggle and rise of Deborah, a great Judge of the Jewish people. Ms. Stokely spins the intricacies of history into a gossamer veil through which readers share terrors and triumphs in the ancient world. Intelligent choices links what is known of Deborah’s life and times with the art of a good read. The story zooms to life with the author’s gift of showing remote history in the most natural and believable ways. Woman of Flames seems to gallop; I finished it in only a few days, quite a feat for my usual turtle-pace reading. I enthusiastically endorse Woman of Flames not only for fans of historical fiction, but for general audiences as well. Who wouldn’t love a book jammed full of romance, terror, destiny, joy and grace?
This is a very good portrayal of Christian Historical Fiction. I so enjoyed every part of this edge of your seat story! Kim is a very talented writer and I am looking forward to the next book about the queen.
