The text seems to do a decent job of presenting the current state of emergency management, and covers a wide range of mitigation, preparedness, response, and additional topics (from a "general" perspective). The first sections of the book, however, are filled with obvious political bias and pandering/blaming. The authors spent time working under the Clinton Administrations FEMA, and seem to spend no time hiding their disdain for all things of the opposing political aisle. I don't have a particular preference as far as politics goes, but the text makes it too obvious not to see. I appreciate later sections of the book, but none of this was really necessary to explore the topic, and made me question the integrity of subsequent chapters. In addition to that, there are numerous factual and date errors that, for a 5th edition of a book, seem too glaring to not have been caught. These persist throughout the book, along with many instances of awkward phrasing.
It is a text book. You are reading a review of a text book. Please if you are buying this for personal use reevaluate your life
I rented the Kindle version. Emergency management is not the most exciting topic, but the authors do a good job making it as interesting as possible.
JodyK was on it! Ordered 21st, POW!!! Received 24th. As a grad student every penny counts...specially in summer classes! Thank you for getting text to me before start of class on 29th. I had to purchase this for a class. I didnt want to spend a fortune on a book that 1. I would never read again and 2. I would only need for a limited time and would make not much back on by reselling. I "rented" this on my kindle and it was one of the best purchases I have ever made. I used the book for the class, still had it for review if I needed it for my next class. Very VERY happy with the "rent" option with kindle and amazon.
Very informative. Needed it for class and expanded my knowledge.
It's so easy to order textbooks on amazon, why do they even attempt to make you buy books at the book stores anymore? This book is really good for an into to emergency management. If you or someone you know is thinking of a career in EM or public safety, check this book out for concepts and typical employment situations. Other than that, it was shipped fast and arrived brand new. Thanks!
Looking for a detailed and complete overview of Emergency Management (in the USA), than this seems the book a must read. But it's more kind of a course than a book ... lot's of data, lists, ... But ideal to learn about this growing field.
